The biggest magic in sculpture is the creation – when the clay is fresh out of the bag and after about an hour it takes the shape of the being in front of me. Many days and even weeks will be spent on tweaking and perfecting that shape later on, but the magic of that moment, when I step back and acknowledge the change from a lump of dirt into something that resembles a creature, never seems to fade.
It is all well to acquire a piece of art and observe it from time to time… I’d prefer my sculptures to become part of your life in a more physical way though. I’d like you to use them as guardians of your treasures, may that be a watch you take off at the end of the day by your nightstand, or your jewellery collection on your desk, coins and keys by the door, it is your life really, I will not tell you how to add beauty to it. I simply make each piece with some sort of function in mind – to be honest they ask for it themselves – and hope that the one you choose will whisper its purpose when you walk past it and you will kindly oblige.
